The National Department of Health said a total of 1,448 babies were born in South Africa on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025.This was a decrease from the previous year of 1,703 babies born in 2024. The majority of these babies were born in Gauteng followed by Eastern Cape and Limpopo. The department said teenage pregnancy also decreased by more than 50 percent. In 2024, 190 teenagers gave birth on New Year’s Day in comparison to 80 teenagers this year.
