First, it’s Eskom electricity tariffs, now a secret vehicle tax in South Africa. Sadly, SARS has increased CO2 tax from April 2024 onwards. Of course, emissions tax on new vehicles in South Africa is not really that secret. First introduced in 2010, according to the International Monetary Fund, the official carbon tax rate was set at R120 per gram. This was for any emission above a 120 g/km CO2 threshold.

Thereafter, this secret vehicle tax in South African has steadily increased over the decades. Likewise, the acceptable threshold has dropped. It’s currently 95 g/km for passenger…
